Greetings Glocal Citizens!
I’m sure many of you remember the groundbreaking web series An African City (http://www.anafricancity.tv). We’ve even hosted a panel featuring creator of the series Nicole Amarteifio (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/nicole-amarteifio) in our writing as activism series. My guest this week launched her creative career as a cast member on the series and she hasn’t looked back since. Maame Adjei (https://www.instagram.com/p/DTitZFJgjlY/) is a Ghanaian storyteller, producer, director, entrepreneur and cultural archivist.
As the founder of Sweet Roots Media (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://oursweetroots.com/&ved=2ahUKEwjW9abv-eiTAxVWVEEAHcRKEs4QFnoECA4QAQ&usg=AOvVaw2XBCrT3lPcyFgqnj0Rtu6c), she leads a women-driven media hub dedicated to amplifying cultural narratives and preserving history through high-quality storytelling. Their work spans documentary scripted, brand storytelling, and immersive experiences, all crafted to resonate on a global scale.
Beyond media, she is the founder of Duruyeh (https://duruyeh.com), a bold jewelry brand celebrating heritage, beauty, and self-expression. Every piece tells a story, designed not just as an accessory but as a keepsake to be passed down.
Maame is also deeply invested in archival work and co-founded Korabea which focuses on preserving, protecting, and uplifting the stories of Ghanaian women, both past and present, through exhibitions, educational projects, and a forthcoming podcast. #NewPodcastAlert!

Greetings Glocal Citizens!
The final stretch of 2025 is upon us and along with winding down our year-long Glocal Citizens @5 commemoration, this flashback forward episode is right on time for many reasons. In her new book, Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden from Us (https://annamalaikatubbs.com/bookshelf/), my returning guest, Anna Malaika Tubbs (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/anna-malaika-tubbs) not only prompts readers (and listeners) to connect the many dots that encircle the systems and institutions that animate the current Administration of the United States, she also proposes a vision for how we collectively flash forward and overcome the inherent limitations to patriarchy, in the US and globally. The solution--people power.
Anna is a two-time New York Times bestselling author and multidisciplinary expert on current and historical understandings of race, gender, and equity. With a Ph.D. in Sociology and a Masters in Multidisciplinary Gender Studies from the University of Cambridge in addition to a Bachelors in Medical Anthropology from Stanford University, Anna translates her academic knowledge into stories that are clear and engaging. Her articles have been published by TIME Magazine, New York Magazine, Newsweek, The Guardian, and others. She first joined us to talk about her first book, The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of MLK Jr, Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation, which came out in 2021. Anna’s storytelling also takes form in her talks, including her TED Talk that has been viewed 2 million times, as well as the scripted and unscripted screen projects she has in development which she hints at in our conversation. #Listenandlearn more!

Greetings Glocal Citizens!
I met this week’s guest Patricia Lokwa Servant last November in Accra at a Forge: Harnessing Creative Arts for Reparatory Justice. The convening turned out to be a mini Glocal Citizens summit for us Accra-based peeps lead by Makmid Kamara (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/makmid-kamara) in his new role leading Reform Initiatives (https://reforminitiatives.org), with Esther Armah (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/esther-armah) and Nyamal Tutdeal (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/nyamal-tutdeal) participating as facilitators and storytellers Emmanual Etim (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/emmanuel-etim) and Brigitte Perenyi (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/brigitte-perenyi) also took part. The program was designed to strengthen the reparations movement by fostering solidarity among artists, cultural workers, civil society, and government leaders across the African diaspora and I can say that as a group we gained much and continue to make progress amongst ourselves. This is indeed indicative of this conversation with Patricia, a program strategist, storyteller, and cultural organizer born in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She is the Founder of http://CongoLove.org (http://congolove.org/), Co-Founder of the Andrée Blouin Cultural Center (https://andreeblouin.org) in Kinshasa, and a Development Consultant with Friends of the Congo (https://friendsofthecongo.org). Her work centers African knowledge, community resilience, and youth leadership across the continent and the global diaspora.
For more than a decade, she has designed and led multi-country initiatives strengthening institutions, expanding equity, and building pathways for collective empowerment. She has supported regional movements with Africans Rising (https://www.africansrising.org), helped shape global narrative and education ecosystems with Farafina: The Black Link (https://www.farafinatheblacklink.org), and advanced gender-responsive learning programs with the African Women Development Fund (https://awdf.org).
Patricia currently serves as Fundraising and Partnerships Lead for SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College (https://www.soshgic.edu.gh) in Ghana, where she strengthens donor systems and cultivates cross-border collaborations with aims of supporting young African students. She is also the former host of the radio show Congo Live (http://www.congolive.org/show/), where she amplified stories of Congolese culture, history, and global engagement.
Patricia’s work bridges generations and geographies. She remains committed to building systems that honor African memory, uplift community wisdom, and support young people to lead with purpose and dignity. With Pan-Africanism at the heart of her life’s work, Patricia is making her mark as an architect of our collective #panafricanprogress mission!

Greetings Glocal Citizens!

I met this week’s guest Patricia Lokwa Servant last November in Accra at a Forge: Harnessing Creative Arts for Reparatory Justice. The convening turned out to be a mini Glocal Citizens summit for us Accra-based peeps lead by Makmid Kamara in his new role leading Reform Initiatives, with Esther Armah and Nyamal Tutdeal participating as facilitators and storytellers Emmanual Etim and Brigitte Perenyi also took part. She is the Founder of http://CongoLove.org , Co-Founder of the Andrée Blouin Cultural Center in Kinshasa, and a Development Consultant with Friends of the Congo. Her work centers African knowledge, community resilience, and youth leadership across the continent and the global diaspora.

For more than a decade, she has designed and led multi-country initiatives strengthening institutions, expanding equity, and building pathways for collective empowerment. She has supported regional movements with Africans Rising, helped shape global narrative and education ecosystems with Farafina: The Black Link, and advanced gender-responsive learning programs with the African Women Development Fund.

Patricia currently serves as Fundraising and Partnerships Lead for SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College in Ghana, where she strengthens donor systems and cultivates cross-border collaborations with aims of supporting young African students. She is also the former host of the radio show Congo Live, where she amplified stories of Congolese culture, history, and global engagement.

In case you missed us last week there’s good reason. My glocal speak for the week was #UNGA80. The streets and sounds of NYC all pointed to the United Nations General Assembly and myriad sideline events. My week was about all thing #PanAfricanProgress and I look forward to sharing stories from the ground in the coming months. One thing is for sure, the giant that is Africa is awake with millions of youth and experienced diasporans ready to keep all of our eyes wide open.
Much of that story is alive and well in my guest this week. Myra Dunoyer Vahighene is a storyteller, creative entrepreneur, and founder of Eleza Masolo, a cultural platform born on YouTube in 2020 and officially launched in 2022 to amplify African voices through storytelling, fashion, and visual arts. She authored Nyuma, the Thirsty Fish (https://a.co/d/2dY2FxR), a children's book tackling water justice in Africa, and regularly speaks across the continent — from Abidjan to Nairobi — about youth empowerment, branding, and narrative sovereignty. A Harvard-trained cultural leader, Myra blends Afro fashion, social storytelling, and entrepreneurship to inspire the new generation of African creators across borders.
We meet in Nairobi at the New Cities Summit in June of this year where our common passion for elevating storytelling targeting African children forged our connection. Her most recent literary work Ceux qu’on ne sauvera pas (The Ones We Couldn’t Save) (https://a.co/d/iLT8FXs), published on August 10, 2025 is a powerful book blending real-life testimonies, allegory, and prophetic narrative to recount thirty years of war and suffering in her homeland, the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Through this work is a moving tribute and a lasting call to remember the forgotten victims of ongoing conflict.

Greetings Glocal Citizens!
As we hit the halfway mark on 2025 our treat this week is a thought-provoking conversation with Wana Udobang, a multifaceted writer, poet, performer, curator, and storyteller based in Lagos, Nigeria. I met Wana last year during the Pa Gya! Literary Festival in Accra where she faciliated her own unique writing workshop - “Comfort Food” a storytelling and poetry workshop that uses food as a conduit to explore memories, history, joy, and healing which was born out of her culinary quality time during the pandemic. In this lively conversation we cover Wana's extensive body of work which encompasses her journey of becoming a creative professional in Nigeria, her spoken word albums and how she has honed her craft building a framework for entrepreneurship using various storytelling platforms.

Greetings Glocal Citizens!
This week we have another flashback forward episode with experienced television host, reporter, producer, public speaker, published writer, and returning guest, Ivy Prosper (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/ivy-prosper). Since leaving her role working with the Ghana Tourism Authority she’s laser focused on her creative media company, Prosper Creative Group, which produces content, consults with clients and supports projects in the creative industries. As an advocate for empowering women and girls, she’s been outspoken on issues regarding self-esteem, positive body image and gender equality; she recently launched The Ivy Prosper Show (https://www.youtube.com/@IvyProsperShow) as a platform dedicated to telling these stories.

Greetings Glocal Citizens!
This week is the finale of our writing as activism series at the 2024 Pa Gya! Literary Festival (https://writersprojectghana.com/pagyafest/). It has been such a pleasure bringing the works and words of these writers to a wider audience. It has been a wonderful multi-generational compilation of wisdom across genres. Joining us this week is Ivana Akotowaa Ofori, a Ghanaian storyteller known also by the alias, “The Spider Kid.” She is a weaver of words in many forms, including fiction, non-fiction and spoken-word poetry. Akotowaa has been nominated for various awards for her prose writing. Her work is included in the Flash Fiction Ghana anthology, Kenkey for Ewes and Other Very Short Stories, and the Writivism anthology, And Morning Will Come.
She is also included in the Africa Risen Anthology 2022 (http://Tor.com) with her short story, “Exiles of Witchery”. Akotowaa’s debut novella, The Year of Return (2023) (https://www.android-press.com/product-page/the-year-of-return-paperback) has been published in the US with Android Press and in West Africa with Smartline Publishers.
Writing aside, Akotowaa spends much of her time looking for excuses to make everything purple and this imaginative, playful spirit definitely shines through our conversation.

Greetings Glocal Citizens!

This week is the finale of our writing as activism series at the 2024 Pa Gya! Literary Festival.

She is also included in the Africa Risen Anthology 2022 with her short story, “Exiles of Witchery”. Akotowaa’s debut novella, The Year of Return (2023) has been published in the US with Android Press and in West Africa with Smartline Publishers.

Writing aside, Akotowaa spends much of her time looking for excuses to make everything purple and this imaginative, playful spirit definitely shines through our conversation.

Greetings Glocal Citizens!
I’m back in Accra and it’s HOT and HUMID, but thankfully not so dusty--I’ve successfully evaded the Harmattan! A significant contrast to the environs for my guest this week who dials in from her hometown of London, England. Raised between London and Brooklyn with roots in Jamaica, Aruba and Donimica, Marlea Edwards was drawn to the creative arts from theatre to photography, storytelling, mythology and anthropology from an early age. She is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary creative artist and creative consultant with a key focus on visual storytelling and connecting to audiences. She is CEO and founder of Me + You Films, a boutique production company. As a global, independent professional creative director, producer, director, writer, filmmaker, and edit producer, her early career and work includes working on award-winning BBC shows like Top Gear, Strictly Come Dancing and Eastenders 25 Live, to the London 2012 Olympic Games, London and New York Fashion week and Lenny Kravitz’s Strut Tour. Other Brands and Clients include Endemol, BBC, Tom Ford and Tom Ford Beauty, Gucci, DVF, Kohl’s, FarFetch, Lush Cosmetics, Preen and ITN Productions. Her latest project, Garms: Black Culture's Influence on British Fashion (https://youtu.be/9wnbOFO6lds?si=eZz_tvYQX1O2EgyK), a one-off documentary deep dive into the world of Black British fashion and culture premiers this week on Wednesday, February 21st.
Currently writing and freelancing for award-winning brands and production companies, her own and others, when she’s not working with commercial clients she creates artwork with an African spiritualist theme focused on the female form.

Greetings Glocal Citizens!
This week my guest and I cross paths not only as fellow Stanford Alums, but also as Ghanaians. Born in Mexico and raised around the world, a Ghanaian-American, Dr. Anna Malaika Tubbs holds a Ph.D in Sociology and Masters in Multidisciplinary Gender Studies from the University of Cambridge in addition to a Bachelors in Anthropology from Stanford University. Anna’s research, writing, and talks are centered on gender and race issues in the U.S., especially as these relate to the pervasive erasure of Black women. Anna’s debut book, The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr, Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation is a New York Times Bestseller as well as a New York Times Editor’s Choice and an Amazon Editor’s Pick.
Anna was also previously the First Partner of Stockton. In her role, she co-authored the “Report on the Status of Women in Stockton” to help guide future policy decisions with the experiences of diverse women in mind. As a result of this work she was named one of six pivotal powerbrokers in the Bay Area by San Francisco Magazine in 2019.
Anna has published articles on topics ranging from the importance of inclusivity and feminism to addressing the unique burden Black mothers carry in the U.S. for Time Magazine, New York Magazine, The Guardian, CNN, Motherly, Blavity, Huffington Post, Darling Magazine, and For Harriet.
She currently lives in Los Angeles, California with her husband and two children, where she is discovering a new chapter in her creative career with multiple writing projects in the works which you'll learn more about as you listen to our lively conversation.

Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week my guest, Jamaican-born Natasha Moore, is a longtime friend that blessed me with a visit to Ghana over the recent Easter holidays. Our relocation stories synced in the same timezone (sometimes) as she relocated to London from Sydney around the same time that I began my journey in Accra. A stamped and sealed Glocal Citizen, Natasha is a success-driven leader with 20 years of experience delivering results across multiple industries and is currently the Global Head of Talent Development at Christie’s (https://www.christies.com/?lid=1&sc_lang=en). She is a performance–driven, human capital and organisational development professional, with a successful track record delivering talent development strategies and programmes that are directly aligned with a firm’s overall objectives such that the specific skills and capabilities meet the demands of clients and changing market conditions.
Natasha has worked in global roles throughout her career and has extensive experience working with senior executives to develop their workforce with a global agenda in mind. Her experience is anchored in aligning talent development with organizational profitability objectives and as a thought leader, trusted advisor, consultant, and mentor to clients and peers which has prepared her perfectly for her current role and the next phase of growing both personally and professionally. We'll hear about this and much more in this multi-continental journey with Natasha.
